Cyril MacPhee Obituary

Cyril MacPhee Obituary: The Cape Breton musical community is mourning today after the loss of one of its most popular singers and songwriters, Cyril MacPhee. He died last night following a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease, leaving a huge gap in the hearts of his family, friends, and fans.

Cyril MacPhee was an extremely popular Cape Breton musician, highly regarded for his heart-in-throat songwriting and rich vocals. His songs, like the much-loved “Nova Scotia to Me,” came from the heart and captured many; this encapsulated all that his home province meant to him. He is a staple of the local scene, playing in so many different venues: taking the stage at St. Matthew’s Church during the Brakin’ Tradition Reunion Show, where he and his bandmates held the audience captive under an enchanted spell.

His contributions to Cape Breton music were felt far and wide, and now the tributes are pouring in since the sad news of his passing was announced.

Dwight Parker wrote on his Facebook page: “So sorry to hear of the passing of Cape Breton Musician Cyril MacPhee from complications from Parkinson’s Disease. Deepest condolences to his family & many friends.”.

The Celtic Music Interpretive Centre also sent condolences: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Cyril MacPhee. Cyril was a Cape Breton songwriter who has shared with us so many delightful, earthy songs and performances in so many venues, elevated by his rich vocals and great instrumentals. We offer our deepest condolences to Cyril’s family and friends.”

Well, Jay MacDougall, who had a chance to work with Cyril, said: “Sad to learn about the passing of Cyril MacPhee. I got to know him a little when I was hosting songwriting circles 20 years ago, and we played his music on The Coast 89.7. Nova Scotia To Me and L’Acadie are instant time machines back to my first days in radio. He was such a kind man, a wonderful writer, and a fabulous storyteller. Thinking about his family and all of his friends today. Thanks for sharing him with all of us.”

Aside from being a musician, Cyril was a photographer. His profile, at one time, had read: “I’m a singer/songwriter from Cape Breton with a passion for photography since as long as I can remember. I’ve passed this on to my daughter, Haley MacPhee, and she’s running with it.” His love for photography was another avenue through which he captured the beauty of the world around him.

Cyril is survived by his wife, Rhodena, and daughter, Haley. He leaves a legacy of music, photography, and countless lives touched by his art and kindness.

His passing takes with it the very talented musician and a most well-loved member of the community of Cape Breton. His songs, spirit, and love for story-telling live on in those people who have known and loved him.
