Max Petett Jackson County TN
The Tennessee education community is in mourning as word has spread of the passing of Dr. Max Petett, former principal at Cookeville High School and current principal of Jackson County High School. He and his wife have passed away due to an unintentional drowning over the weekend at Dale Hollow Lake.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed Sunday in a Facebook post from the Jackson County School System.
“It is with great sadness that I share with you the devastating news that our beloved high school principal, Dr. Max Petett, and his wife passed away in a fatal accident this weekend. Our hearts are heavy as we grieve this immense loss,” the message read.
Dr. Petett was known for unwavering commitment to students and staff. He was more than just an administrator, a mentor to many, a friend, and a champion for education. His presence made all the difference within the school community, leaving footprints that would last forever. His sudden going has really torn apart so many lives.
“His dedication, kindness and unwavering commitment to our school will never be forgotten,” the statement by the school system went on to say. “As we prepare to return to school, we know this loss will be heavy in our hearts.”
According to Clay County Sheriff Brandon Boone, Dr. Petett and his wife went missing from a houseboat on Dale Hollow Lake. When first responders arrived, they found both already deceased in the water. While their deaths do appear to be the result of an accidental drowning, officials are awaiting autopsy results to determine the official cause of death.
“There is nothing at this time to indicate foul play, and this appears to have been a terrible accident,” Sheriff Boone said. “But some of the facts are still not known and the investigation will continue. ”
In the wake of this tragic loss, Jackson County Schools will provide support services to the students, staff, and families. The school campus will have counselors where those in this period of mourning will find quiet reflection and remembrance spaces.
The school district also indicated that as information on the memorial services becomes available, it will publish details on how to honor Dr. Petett and his wife.
“Let us lean on one another as we navigate the days ahead, honoring Dr. Petett by continuing the work he so passionately led,” the statement concluded.
The legacy for many of Dr. Petett will be that of an educator and a leader. His love for teaching and dedication to students shaped the lives of so many, which makes this loss all the more tragic for this community.
